<> Re: Current affairs briefing for 6th December

The problem with such questions is that they presuppose a certain kind
of disposition on the part of the person being questioned. Was it a
Hindu gift? Or was it a Muslim carving? Were we any less 'barbaric'
in 1996 than what the marauding invaders had been? How far back in
time can one go to correct historical blunders? When did I lose my
pride in the first place; to think of getting it back?

While I appreciate your bringing to light some more facts which I have
never had a chance to come across, I wonder why is that the Press had
failed to notice them!!! Oh, then you may call them not the Hindu
Press and you seem to be under the notion that India is only of the
Hindu for the Hindu and by the Hindu. For people like me, India does
not belong to Hindus alone; it belongs to every other section --
whether it is muslim, christian, buddhist or parsi. Right in our
constitution we have proclaimed that we are a secular country. It
belongs to them as much as it belongs to us. Had I been born in the
country in which the constitution proclaims that I belong to a Hindu or
Muslim or Christian country, I would have had no problem with that.
Having pronounced the country secular, how can one sect or creed expect
the others to go elsewhere?

I never said they are more tolerant and we are less tolerant. We could
certainly have been more tolerant than what we were in 1996. Did our
impatience solve the problem forever? I don't expect it to be solved
in my life time either, because of the abject failure of the political
system. Even during the surcharged atmosphere that was prevalent in
1996, our system failed to throw up a suitable personality or coterie
of personalities which had the leadership to control the mobs. We have
only people who can evoke emotions; but don't know how to subside them.
A good leader is one who can do both.

Till such time as the country finds such a leadership, it cannot help
but be ruled by the stoic majority who don't care about what the so
called leaders do and care about. Relegation of the Ram Janmabhoomi
issue to the back of the public mind is as much a manifestation of that
as my calling for more moderation on our part in 1996.
