'Apocalypto' wins weekend box office
POSTED: 1:24 a.m. EST, December 11, 2006
Story Highlights
· "Apocalypto" debuts at No. 1 despite Mel Gibson's troubles
· $14.2 million haul modest compared to "Passion of the Christ"
· Sony romance "The Holiday" is No. 2 movie with $13.5 million
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Mel Gibson's bloody epic "Apocalypto"
debuted as the No. 1 weekend movie, proving the filmmaker still can
deliver a winner despite his drunken-driving arrest and anti-Semitic
rant last summer.
"Apocalypto," a Disney release set in the Mayan civilization and told
in an obscure Mayan language, opened with $14.2 million, according to
studio estimates Sunday.
It was a modest haul compared to the $83.8 million opening weekend of
Gibson's last movie, the 2004 religious blockbuster "The Passion of the
Christ," which went on to do $370 million domestically.
But "Apocalypto" overcame the baggage of Gibson's personal troubles as
well as its difficult subject matter, which features a no-name cast in
a hyper-violent tale that includes beheadings and images of hearts
ripped from people's chests. (Review)
"The movie obviously succeeds on its own level. I think people probably
are a bit on the surprised side around town that it's No. 1," said
Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney. "Two months ago, nobody
would have bet on that."
Sony's romance "The Holiday" debuted at No. 2 with $13.5 million.
Directed by Nancy Meyers, the movie stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet,
Jack Black and Jude Law in the story of American and British women who
swap homes for the holidays and find love in the process.
The Warner Bros. thriller "Blood Diamond," starring Leonardo DiCaprio,
Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou, opened at No. 5 with $8.5
million. Set against Sierra Leone's civil war in the 1990s, the film
follows a mercenary pursuing a rare diamond.
Also from Warner Bros., the holiday comedy "Unaccompanied Minors,"
about a group of kids running amok while stranded at an airport on
Christmas Eve, premiered at No. 6 with $6.2 million.
The Warner Bros. animated hit "Happy Feet" and Sony's James Bond
adventure "Casino Royale," which had been the top two movies for three
straight weekends, slipped to Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.
"Happy Feet" took in $12.7 million, raising its total to $137.7
million. "Casino Royale" grossed $8.8 million, lifting its total to
$128.9 million.
The overall box office fell sharply, with the top 12 movies grossing
$86.8 million, down 25 percent from the same weekend last year, when
the blockbuster "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe" opened with $65.6 million.
Disney reported that Gibson's "Apocalypto" drew solid crowds across the
board, with moviegoers equally split between men and women and the core
of the audience ranging from 18 to 45.
The publicity over Gibson's problems and his contriteness since last
summer may have stoked interest in "Apocalypto," said Paul
Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
"Whenever I tell people I saw the movie, they'd be like, 'You saw it?
How was it?' There was a huge curiosity factor," Dergarabedian said. "A
movie about Mayan civilization was never destined to be a big hit, let
alone a No. 1 movie. But through Disney's marketing, which highlights
Mel Gibson -- I believe they associated him very closely with the movie
-- I think that strategy paid off."

I must barf again as anal comes to the defence of his pedo god. You
comparing a pedophile to the Son of God is an insult to practicing
Christians everywhere.
Jesus said "Suffer the little children to come unto Me..."
In your pedo god's case it would be "Little children will suffer when I
come unto them."
Jesus would be sickened by the likes of wacko... and the shit like you
that defend and condone wacko's evil ways.
And if Jesus were a popstar, he would have relesed his Katrina Benefit
single by now.

Wait... wait... Placing your hand over your entire genital area with your
middle finger extending deeply toward the area between your balls and
anus like your probing for Klingons and jiggling vigorously is "just a
dance gesture"?? Lordy, Twila must be devasted to have missed out on
THAT one.
F'loons. Can't live with them, can't toss their genitals into the shark

The "love" part sounds like him, but doesn't the parenthetical part

For Monday December 11, 2006
Aquarius -- Cooperate with partners and family members during the
morning hours when joint progress is to the fore. Your health is
dynamically aspected today to the point where it can be improved, new
preventive-medicine routines can be introduced, and the cause of
longevity can be served admirably.
Lucky Number: 344, Financial outlook: uncertain, Compatible sign:
Aries.
Pisces -- Your outlook is bright and cheerful, and your health is well
aspected during most of the day, although you may be exposed to
virus-type conditions during the late evening. Shopping for larger
items, once-in-a-lifetime purchases, will go well during the afternoon.
Lucky Number: 555, Financial outlook: very strong, Compatible sign:
Taurus.
Aries -- Your dreams remain with you after awakening. Under the
morning's aspects, the desire to communicate can be stronger than your
ability to. You have first-rate financial support, and budgets can be
revamped, and others have worthwhile advice for you.
Lucky Number: 547, Financial outlook: excellent, Compatible sign:
Taurus.
Taurus -- The early-morning aspects indicate dissension between those
of similar tastes. Noon brings new support for business matters, but
competition becomes intense in the evening. Money matters are apt to
wax and wane throughout the day.
Lucky Number: 625, Financial outlook: excellent, Compatible sign:
Cancer.
Gemini -- Your mood may vary much today. You can feel imposed upon and
somewhat bitter at times, as you're inclined to be independent and to
assert your rights. Then you can shift emphasis and be
ultra-cooperative and helpful, with an accent on unity of purpose and
even dependence.
Lucky Number: 376, Financial outlook: excellent, Compatible sign:
Taurus.
Cancer -- Be prepared for plenty of excitement in the areas of romance

STAVROS' PARENTS SNUB PARIS
December 11, 2006 -- WE are shocked - shocked! - that Paris Hilton may have
bought her own faux engagement ring to start speculation that Stavros
Niarchos is going to marry her. Hilton wore a fake diamond solitaire on her
left ring finger to an alice+olivia dinner party last week and wouldn't
answer questions about her and Niarchos. But close friends say they're not
engaged - and moreover, the shipping heir's parents have no intention of
even meeting their son's sometime succubus. "They refused to meet her last
year when Paris and Stavros had dated for a while," a source said. "Paris
even followed him and his family to Hawaii, where they go every New Year's,
and they still wouldn't meet her. They think she's tacky." It's a sentiment
that seems to be shared by the father of Nicky Hilton's paramour, David
Katzenberg. A family friend said Jeffrey Katzenberg, the former Disney exec
who co-founded DreamWorks, "thinks the Hiltons are just . . . lowbrow and
that his son is young and should be dating around." Meanwhile, it's only
been a month, but Nicky and David are already saying, "I love you."

"Spider-Man" director resurrects "Shadow"
Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:35 AM ET
By Borys Kit
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts
of men? Columbia Pictures and "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi know.
After a lengthy negotiation, the studio has acquired the screen rights to
"The Shadow," the legendary 1930s pulp hero, for a big-screen adaptation to
be produced by Raimi and Josh Donen through their Buckaroo Entertainment
banner. Raimi is not attached to direct at this time.
"The Shadow" debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show which aimed to boost the
magazine circulation of sponsor Street & Smith. The character was actually
the moniker for the announcer, and listeners began demanding stories based
on the name.
Walter B. Gibson created the character, writing the adventures of a
crime-fighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape, and who had the
power to cloud men's minds.
The Shadow became one of the greatest pulp heroes of the time, and the radio
series, which featured a young Orson Welles, spawned the catchphrase "Who
knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!"
The character proved a merchandising bonanza, was the subject of seminal
comic books, and influenced an array of pop culture, from Batman to "V for
Vendetta."
The character moved to the screen, becoming the hero of several movies in
late '30s and '40s, a Columbia cliffhanger serial starring Victor Jory, and
a couple of TV series in the early days of television.
The Shadow's most recent incarnation was a big-budget 1994 feature from
Universal starring Alec Baldwin and directed by Russell Mulcahy. The movie
didn't fare well at the box office, quashing a hoped-for franchise.
A "Shadow" movie has long been a dream project for Raimi, and the
crime-fighter's influence can be seen in Raimi's 1990 movie, "Darkman."
"I've been a passionate Shadow fan ever since I was a kid and have long
dreamed of bringing this character to the screen," Raimi said.
After "Spider-Man 3" opens in May, the future of the Raimi-directed
mega-successful franchise becomes an open question. Star Tobey Maguire has
not committed to doing more. And Columbia relishes having Raimi's cinematic
fingers on another action hero. The screenplay will be written by Siavash
Farahani, whose credits include "Max Payne," a video game adaptation for
20th Century Fox.

Tenor walks off stage at La Scala
Tenor Roberto Alagna marched off the stage at La Scala when the audience
booed him during the second performance of Franco Zeffirelli's "Aida." He
was replaced seconds later by his understudy, who rushed on wearing jeans.
"I do not deserve this kind of reception," Alagna told La Repubblica
newspaper after his early exit from Saturday night's performance.
Thursday night's opening of Zeffirelli's "Aida" was a much-anticipated
event, with Italian Premier Romano Prodi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel
among the many prominent figures in audience.
That audience applauded for more than 15 minutes after the final curtain
fell, standing to cheer Zeffirelli, conductor Riccardo Chailly and a cast
led by the Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Violeta Urmana in the title role and
Alagna as Radames.
But the second performance did not go quite as smoothly.
The audience erupted in boos and whistles when Alagna came on stage and
began singing the big aria "Celeste Aida." Alagna stopped, looked at the
public, then walked off, according to Italian news reports. Understudy
Antonello Palombi, still in jeans, rushed out.
La Scala general manager Stephane Lissner apologized to the audience before
the opening of the third act.
"In many years at La Scala I had never seen anything like what happened
tonight," Chailly told reporters after the performance.
No one answered the phone at La Scala on Monday morning. The next
performance was scheduled Tuesday night.

Ben Affleck: I Don't Want to Embarrass My Daughter
MONDAY DECEMBER 11, 2006 08:30AM EST
By Stephen M. Silverman
Ben Affleck, whose 2004 split from Jennifer Lopez made international
headlines, has changed his ways since settling down and becoming a dad, he
says.
"I've never been very judicious about my own behavior or choices until they
had an impact on people other than me," Affleck, 34, tells USA Today.
"Obviously, my wife. And my daughter, who's going to have my last name - I
don't want her to mutter it over a drink. I want her to be proud of her old
man."
Affleck and his wife, Jennifer Garner, never released photos of 1-year-old
Violet. "We just didn't sell them - that was the thing," says Affleck, whose
directorial debut, Gone, Baby, Gone, is due in 2007.
"I'm extraordinarily lucky and privileged," he says, "and I've tried not to
be bitter, but I have developed a reactionary defensiveness."
He adds, "But for my child, she didn't make the bargain I did. She didn't
make that choice. And I don't want her to have to pay for the parents' sins.
I try to protect her privacy. I'll end up in the magazines, and that's life,
and I can live with it, but I try to shield my daughter."

Is he going to buy up all existing copies of Armageddon and Pearl Harbor
and destroy them, then?

hear how much he hates people. all people. he's a f*cking whack case >>
<<I seriously remember that a lot of these "rules" were also his rules

2006. Hey George, write some new material!!>>
Doesn't Carlin get a lot of stuff attributed to him that he never said?
Especially political rants. If Carlin "said it" I always check snopes.
Not to mention that the Rules aren't particularly funny or incisive no
matter who wrote them.
